On this warm sunny morning, I am having coffee with my good friend, the sweet and loving Caryl McAdoo! Caryl, can you tell us about THE BEDWARMER’S SON and why you wrote it.

How The Bedwarmer’s Son came to be a book is a fun story, and I’d love to share it! I had an idea for a new contemporary book based a little on the television show The Voice that I enjoyed so much. I thought…what if instead of the big new singer, the program is looking for the big new author?

I call it The Pitch, and started writing in November 2013. It’s about half done with 35,000 words now. Anyway, the characters are attending writers’ conferences all over the country looking for the next ‘Great American Novel’. I needed to have a lot of titles and skeleton story premises…The Bedwarmer’s Son was one of those.

It wouldn’t get out of my head. It’s such an intriguing title. It demanded to be written, and so… Here it is, about to be released in September!

This novel is not in my Texas Romance series, but is a “companion” book to it. You remember four-year-old Charley in HEARTS STOLEN, book two…and him grown up and the hero in book six JUST KIN…well, you’ll meet Charley’s son Nathaniel and grandson Buddy (Broderick Eversole) Nightingale in The Bedwarmer’s Son. They’re minor characters, and on scene only in a chapter or two, but they are introduced.
The Bedwarmer’s Son has two storylines. It opens in 1928 where the title character, William “Billy” Sinclair II is on trial for the murder of his white half-brother Jamison. That storyline’s heroine, Alice Parmalee is his lawyer who falls for his grandson, William “Will” Robert Sinclair IV.
Courthouse Excerpt
To explain the why of his actions, Billy tells Alice the story of his mother, the slave and bedwarmer Jasmine. Of
course, every time he starts, I break into her point of view, and readers will find themselves back in the mid 1800’s with her. She is a wonderful spunky character, and I’m blessed to share her story.
I’d like to entice you a bit with the opening line 🙂 “He sold us right before he married that fancy lady from England, then bought us back the next Spring.” See my meme of the Three Springs, my fictitious plantation near Dalton, Georgia.

I’m excited about this story because it’s so different from all the others I’ve written so far. I love going back and forth between the two stories. There’s plenty of period racial tension with the KKK unhappy about the pretty white attorney defending the old black man.

And of course, he and his grandson are trusting God and believing He sent Alice who is not saved and has been carefully taught that putting any faith in an invisible being is a fool’s errand. Though she and Will fall in love, he can’t unequally yoke himself and choses obedience to God’s Word. At the end of the story, when Billy’s trial is over, I think readers may be cheering.

1st ReviewI hope so. I pray that Alice’s journey will cause readers to draw closer to the Lord, while others might reconsider a few of the things they’ve been comfortable believing as to going deeper in their own relationship with our Awesome God.

Oh, and as an aside…I wrote Lady Luck’s A Loser back in 2001 long before The Batchelor ever hit TV. It’s a mature inspirational romance about a wealthy man inviting nine women to come live at his bed and breakfast—under the guise of hiring a manager for it—in order to choose a wife. Hopefully if The Pitch becomes a TV reality show, I’ll get proper credit! 🙂

1 VOW UNBROKENTo celebrate our coffee chat, Caryl is giving away a copy of her book A Vow Unbroken! This is the first book in her Texas Romance Series.  To enter, tell us your favorite Caryl McAdoo book and why you love it! This giveaway will end on Monday, September 5th at 11:59 pm PDT.

LomgHairCaryl McAdoo, praying her story gives God glory, loves writing for Christian genres–historical and contemporary romance, Biblical fiction, and mid-grade especially. In 2014, Simon and Schuster debuted VOW UNBROKEN, a historical Christian romance set in 1832 Texas, and Caryl followed with three additional novels. In April, LADY LUCK’S A LOSER (contemporary, mature, inspirational romance); September’s debut, HEARTS STOLEN (set in 1839-1844), book two of her historical Christian Texas Romances–a #1 Amazon Best-seller; and in November, A LITTLE LOWER THAN THE ANGELS, volume one of her new Biblical fiction series, The Generations–also an Amazon #1 Best-seller.

In 2008, her high school sweetheart-husband Ron moved her to the woods of Red River County. Caryl counts four children and sixteen grandsugars life’s biggest blessings believing all good things come from God. Praying her story gives God glory, she hopes each one ministers His love, mercy, and grace to its readers. She and Ron live in Clarksville, Texas with two grandsons, Christian and Benjamen.
